I'm kinda new here so I thought I'd share something about myself. I love travelling and try to travel overseas at least once every year. Being in Australia has a lot of ups but also comes with a lot of downs. One of them being that travelling anywhere is damn expensive in terms of flight costs (exclude New Zealand ). I'm 21 so saving money is kind of hard considering there's so much other costs associated with life. But I try save to my best extent as I get more joy from travelling around the world than to spend it on other stuff. Anyways, I went to Europe last year for 6 weeks with a friend and went all over the place. The amount of different cultures and standards there is awesome. The ability to drive a few hours into a totally different country with it's own history, culture, cuisine and language is definitely something I'm envious of, considering we don't have that down here in Australia. I also went to Malaysia towards the end of the year for a few weeks. It's definitely a place you should check out if you have the time! I've just booked a 3 week trip to Japan in June-July so that's something I'm really looking forward to! If anyone's been to Japan before I will gladly accept some suggestions that you may have So what about you guys? Do you travel much or want to travel somewhere? Share your experiences!

I have never travelled too far from where I was born. I am fortunate enough to live in a rural are with 3 major cities within a 2 hour drive so I have seen most of South Western Ontario many times. When I do travel my goal is to see my own country first. I have to get out to BC at some point because I need to see the mountains. Palms trees sound nice and all but laying around in the sun all day on a resort doesn't really appeal to me.

I was in Crete in september with my girlfriend. First time i've been farther than northern Germany (Wacken Open Air 2008). We were there for two weeks and it was amazing. And this June we and a bunch of friends are going to San Francisco. I really looking forward to that. And we will probably go to Santorini sometime in the next two years. But that's a small island so it will probably only be one week. Just google Santorini and you will understand why anyone wants to go there

Have been fortunate to have traveled to Cuba. I still have family there so I go at least twice a year. With my work, I have traveled to Germany, Panama, Rome, and Spain.

Japan is a bit on the expensive side, so try to exchange your currency before you go on holiday. As far as food and entertainment, anything goes... but the best food I had while I was there was simple noodle bowls from street vendors. They have noodle carts just like New York and Philly have hot dog and pretzel carts. Cheap, filling, and awesome. Try to stay away from taxis unless it's very late at night/ early morning. I did all my travel by train. Cheap and always on time, or you get a free ride next time you use the train. There are websites than can help you with simple phrases to interact with people, which I recommend. Showing courtesy and being willing to use their language opens doors... and will make people more likely to offer you assistance should you need it. Other than those bits of knowledge, I leave the rest to you to figure out. Working things out on your own is one of the most rewarding things about traveling. Have a good time!

Especially the main 3 Greek islands

I'm hoping to visit the US/Canada and surrounding countries in the not too distant future.... will be pretty expensive though I imagine haha. Absolutely loved Spain, by far my favourite country in the world. If you haven't been already, go to Pamplona during San Fermin, it is absolutely insane. I was in the main small square area during the opening ceremony and there were about 10k people in all squashed up, it was madness. But I can honestly say that the opening ceremony of San Fermin was the greatest day of my life. Highly highly highly recommended!

Thanks man, I appreciate it! Yeah I'm planning on travelling via train everywhere, thinking about buying the rail pass that will let me hop on the trains for free for a month. Was that what you did as well? I'll be landing in Tokyo and working my way down to Osaka before flying back home to Sydney. Reading people's experiences makes me more excited, cannot wait!

I have gone there several times... mostly job related, since I spent the better part of 20 years in the military. The last time I was there was strictly pleasure, though. I would recommend two or three must-sees for you. Before you leave Tokyo, visit the Imperial Palace. You won't be able to visit all of it, since the Imperial Family still resides there, but the gardens and information centers are very cool. The Peace Memorial in Hiroshima is a must see as well. A very sobering reminder that the weapons which caused this destruction still exist. And the Todaiji Temple. The largest wooden building in the world... Which also houses the largest bronze statue of Buddha in the world as well. BUT... stay away from "hostess bars". Even if a native invites you. A: they generally don't allow gaijin. 2: it's around 10,000 yen per hour to sit and drink in the front room. The back room prices are 3-4 times higher. And D: they are a big draw for the criminal element. While Japan has a lower crime rate than most countries, do not expose yourself to that sort of risk. Stick to the straight and narrow, use a bit of situational awareness, and keep your wallet in your front pocket.
